Turbinaria corals (often called scroll or cup corals) are large-polyp stony (LPS) corals known for their distinctive growth forms, which can resemble cups, plates, or scrolling structures. They typically have bright yellow, green, or brown coloration and feature fleshy polyps that extend during the day, giving them a textured, almost fuzzy appearance. Their hardy nature and adaptability make them a popular choice for reef aquariums, especially for aquarists looking for a unique and relatively low-maintenance coral.
Care Guide
Turbinaria prefer moderate lighting and moderate, indirect water flow to keep their polyps extended and healthy. They thrive in stable water conditions (temperature ~76–80°F, salinity ~1.025, alkalinity 8–9 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1250–1350 ppm) and can tolerate a range of conditions if kept consistent. They are generally peaceful compared to many LPS corals but should still have adequate space. While they rely on photosynthesis, they benefit from occasional feedings of small particulate or meaty foods to support growth and coloration.
