Cyphastrea corals are hardy small-polyp stony (SPS) corals known for their encrusting growth pattern and distinctive, bumpy surface covered in evenly spaced polyps. They often display vibrant colors such as bright green, orange, red, or blue, with contrasting polyps that give them a speckled or “starry” appearance. Their ability to grow over rockwork and create a colorful mat makes them a great choice for adding detail and contrast in reef aquariums, especially in areas where other SPS may struggle.
Care Guide
Cyphastrea prefer low to moderate lighting and low to moderate, indirect water flow. Unlike many SPS corals, they do not require intense lighting and can actually lose color or become stressed under overly strong light. They thrive in stable water conditions (temperature ~76–80°F, salinity ~1.025, alkalinity 8–9 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1250–1350 ppm) and are generally forgiving once established. Place them on rock surfaces where they can encrust and spread, but allow space from neighboring corals, as they can slowly grow over and compete for territory. While they rely primarily on photosynthesis, they may benefit from occasional feeding of fine particulate foods to support growth and enhance coloration.
