Leptoseris corals are small-polyp stony (SPS) corals known for their thin, plating or encrusting growth and often highly reflective, vibrant coloration—especially under blue lighting, where many display glowing greens, oranges, or metallic patterns. They typically grow in delicate, layered sheets and are prized for their ability to create a unique, textured look on rockwork in reef aquariums. Compared to many SPS corals, they are considered somewhat more tolerant of lower light environments.
Care Guide
Leptoseris prefer low to moderate lighting and very gentle to moderate, indirect water flow, as strong flow or intense lighting can cause tissue damage or bleaching. They thrive in stable water conditions (temperature ~76–80°F, salinity ~1.025, alkalinity 8–9 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1250–1350 ppm) and are sensitive to sudden parameter swings. Many species do well in lower-light areas of the tank where other SPS may struggle. While they rely heavily on photosynthesis, they can benefit from occasional feedings of fine particulate foods, though they generally require less supplemental feeding than many LPS corals.
