Psammacora corals are small-polyp stony (SPS) corals known for their encrusting or plating growth and distinctive, textured surface that can resemble sandpaper or small ridges. They often display earthy greens, browns, and sometimes brighter fluorescent tones under actinic lighting, adding a subtle but attractive contrast to reef aquariums. While not as commonly kept as some SPS, they are appreciated for their unique appearance and ability to spread across rockwork.
Care Guide
Psammacora prefer low to moderate lighting and moderate, indirect water flow, which helps keep their surfaces clean without stressing the coral. They require stable water conditions (temperature ~76–80°F, salinity ~1.025, alkalinity 8–9 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1250–1350 ppm) and are sensitive to sudden changes. Like many SPS corals, they rely primarily on photosynthesis but can benefit from occasional feedings of fine particulate foods. Provide adequate space, as they can encrust and slowly spread across nearby surfaces over time.
