Platygyra corals (commonly known as maze corals) are large-polyp stony (LPS) corals recognized for their intricate, maze-like skeletal patterns and fleshy polyps that extend along the ridges. Their unique appearance and vibrant color variations—often in greens, browns, and contrasting multicolors—make them an attractive addition to reef aquariums. They are generally hardy and can adapt well to a range of conditions, making them a good choice for reef keepers with some experience.
For care, Platygyra corals prefer low to moderate lighting and gentle to moderate, indirect water flow to allow their polyps to extend and feed properly. They thrive in stable water conditions (temperature ~76–80°F, salinity ~1.025, alkalinity 8–9 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1250–1350 ppm) and can tolerate minor fluctuations if not frequent. These corals can be semi-aggressive, extending sweeper tentacles at night, so provide adequate spacing from other corals. They benefit from occasional feeding of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or reef blends, which can enhance growth and overall health.
I have seen them in many locations in the wild including Tahiti and the Solomon Islands. On these reefs they grow on rocks and several similar species are often found together. I've found them growing under the branches of Acropora or other branching corals in the dimmer light under the shade of the branches. Generally multiple types of brain corals fill in the gaps found under the branching corals.
