Description and Care

The Super Red Hellfire Anemone (Actinodendron sp.) is an extraordinary marine invertebrate recognized for its intensely colored, intricately branched tentacles and unusual tree-like appearance.

This spectacular specimen displays an exceptionally vivid scarlet-red coloration throughout its densely branched tentacles. Each primary tentacle divides into numerous delicate, finely textured branches, creating an elaborate structure resembling miniature underwater trees or brilliant red coral formations.

The densely arranged branches form an intricate canopy of fiery red coloration, with small areas of darker crimson tissue visible beneath the expanded tentacles. Bright yellow-green highlights are also visible in several areas near the central portion of the specimen, adding striking contrast to the predominantly red appearance.

Unlike the long, smooth tentacles of many familiar reef anemones, Hellfire Anemones possess highly branched tentacles armed with powerful stinging cells called nematocysts. Their distinctive anatomy gives them a remarkable appearance but also requires specialized care and handling.

Members of the genus Actinodendron occur in tropical Indo-Pacific marine environments, where they inhabit sandy and rubble-associated habitats. These anemones can conceal portions of their bodies beneath the substrate while extending their elaborate tentacles into the surrounding water.

Hellfire Anemones are primarily predatory animals that capture small marine organisms using their stinging tentacles. Because their stings can be particularly painful to humans and harmful to aquarium livestock, they are best maintained by experienced aquarists in carefully planned systems.

The Super Red Hellfire Anemone is an exceptional display animal for advanced marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a truly distinctive species with dramatic coloration and unusual morphology.

This WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) specimen has been individually photographed, allowing you to purchase the exact anemone pictured.

Additional Care Notes

Aquarium Environment: The Super Red Hellfire Anemone requires a mature marine aquarium with stable water chemistry and carefully planned livestock compatibility. Its powerful sting makes it unsuitable for most conventional mixed reef aquariums. A dedicated or species-focused system is strongly recommended.

Placement and Attachment: Members of the genus Actinodendron commonly inhabit sandy and rubble-associated environments. Provide a suitable substrate depth and a secure attachment location where the anemone can establish its pedal disc. Some species can retract much of their body beneath the substrate when disturbed.

Lighting and Water Flow: Lighting requirements may vary among species within the genus, and the photosynthetic contribution to their nutrition is not equally well established for all members. Begin with moderate illumination and adjust cautiously based on the animal's response. Gentle to moderate indirect circulation helps deliver suspended food without continuously disturbing the delicate branched tentacles.

Feeding and Nutrition: Hellfire Anemones are predatory cnidarians that capture small marine organisms using specialized stinging cells. Offer appropriately sized portions of thawed mysis shrimp, finely chopped marine shrimp, or other suitable marine meaty foods. Feed conservatively and remove uneaten food to maintain water quality.

Compatibility: The powerful stinging tentacles can seriously injure neighboring corals, fish, and other invertebrates. Avoid placing this anemone near valuable reef livestock or animals that may accidentally contact its expanded tentacles. It should not be considered a suitable clownfish-hosting anemone.

Handling and Safety: Extreme caution is required. Hellfire Anemones can inflict intensely painful stings, potentially causing substantial skin irritation or tissue injury. Never handle the animal with bare hands. Use appropriate protective equipment and tools, and avoid contact with exposed skin. Do not forcibly detach an attached specimen. Seek medical attention for severe or persistent reactions, especially breathing difficulties or widespread symptoms.

Long-Term Care: Maintain stable aquarium conditions, appropriate feeding, and sufficient isolation from other livestock. Healthy specimens generally exhibit secure attachment and regular tentacle expansion, although some may retract in response to disturbance. Persistent tissue deterioration, loss of attachment, or failure to respond to feeding may indicate stress.

Order FAQs

About Our Facility

Q: Are your corals aquacultured?
A: Yes. Many of our corals are grown in our Maryland Certified & Licensed Coral Aquaculture Facility.

Q: Why choose aquacultured corals?
A: Aquacultured corals are:
- More sustainable
- Better adapted to aquarium life
- Typically hardier than wild specimens

Q: Who selects and grows your corals?
A: Our corals are grown and curated by Dr. Mac a Board Certified Veterinary Pathologist with decades of hands-on reef experience.

Ordering & Shipping

Q: What does WYSIWYG mean?
A: “What You See Is What You Get.” The exact coral shown in the photo is the one you will receive.

Q: Can I request a specific color or variation?
A: For WYSIWYG items, what’s pictured is what you get. For non-WYSIWYG items, we do our best to match color and size, but natural variation occurs.

Q: Can I combine multiple orders to save on shipping?
A: Yes—contact us before shipping and we’ll consolidate when possible.

Q: How are corals and fish shipped safely?
A: We use insulated boxes, temperature control (heat/cold packs), and overnight delivery to ensure safe arrival.

Q: What days do you ship?
A: Typically Monday–Wednesday to avoid weekend delays.

Q: Do I need to be home for delivery?
A: Yes—someone should be available to receive livestock immediately.

Q: What if my coral or fish arrives dead (DOA)?
A: Contact us within a specified timeframe (e.g., 2 hours) with clear photos, and we will resolve it quickly.

Q: What voids the guarantee?
A: Missed deliveries, improper acclimation, or delays beyond our control.

Live Arrival Guarantee

Q: What if my coral or fish arrives dead (DOA)?
A: Contact us within a specified timeframe (e.g., 2 hours) with clear photos, and we will resolve it quickly.

Q: What voids the guarantee?
A: Missed deliveries, improper acclimation, or delays beyond our control.

Acclimation & First 24 Hours

Q: How do I acclimate new livestock?
A: Float to match temperature, then drip acclimate before placing in tank.

Q: Should I dip corals before adding them?
A: Yes but be careful, coral dips help prevent pests but use caution. Certain corals might benefit from a short quarantine period instead of a dip so as to further stressing them.

Q: Why does my coral look closed or stressed?
A: This is normal after shipping—most corals open within 24–72 hours.

Aquarium Setup & Compatibility

Q: Where should I place my coral in the tank?
A: Placement depends on the coral type (LPS, SPS, soft). Lighting and flow requirements vary—check each product description.

Q: Can different corals touch each other?
A: Many corals have sweeper tentacles and can sting neighbors. Always allow space.

Q: How fast will my coral grow?
A: Growth depends on species, lighting, water quality, and feeding.
