Xenia corals are a type of soft coral known for their unique pulsing motion, where their feather-like polyps rhythmically open and close, creating a captivating “waving” effect in the aquarium. They come in shades of pink, white, and tan, and can spread rapidly, forming flowing colonies that add movement and life to a reef tank. Their fast growth and dynamic behavior make them a popular choice, though they can become invasive if not managed.
Care Guide
Xenia prefer moderate to strong lighting and moderate water flow, which helps support their pulsing and overall health. They thrive in stable, nutrient-balanced water (temperature ~76–80°F, salinity ~1.025, alkalinity 8–9 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1250–1350 ppm) and are known to grow best in slightly “dirtier” water compared to many corals. They can spread quickly, so give them space or isolate them on rock islands to control growth. Xenia primarily rely on photosynthesis and do not require direct feeding, though they can benefit from dissolved nutrients in the water.
