Blastomussa wellsi is a popular large-polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its large, fleshy polyps and vibrant coloration, often in shades of red, green, purple, and multicolor patterns. Each polyp is distinct and round, giving the coral a striking, almost flower-like appearance when fully expanded. It’s generally considered a hardy and slow-growing coral, making it a great choice for reef keepers looking for a colorful, relatively easy LPS centerpiece.
For care, Blastomussa wellsi prefers low to moderate lighting and gentle, indirect water flow to allow its fleshy tissue to expand without stress. It thrives in stable water conditions (temperature ~76–80°F, salinity ~1.025, alkalinity 8–9 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1250–1350 ppm) and can be sensitive to rapid changes. Provide space from other corals, as it may extend short sweeper tentacles at night. While it relies mainly on photosynthesis, it benefits from occasional feedings of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or finely chopped seafood to support growth and coloration.
