Orange Moon Favia, Favia sp., is a colonial stony coral with fleshy tissue, pronounced skeletal ridges, and distinctive individual corallites. This specimen features a rich fluorescent green base contrasted by large, vivid orange-yellow corallite centers that create the appearance reflected in its Orange Moon name.
The colony displays a rounded, massive growth form with deeply textured ridges radiating around the individual corallites. Bright green coloration covers much of the colony, while the prominent orange to golden-yellow centers provide dramatic contrast. Under reef aquarium lighting, the combination of fluorescent green tissue and warm orange centers creates an especially striking appearance.
Favia species contain symbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates that provide much of their nutritional energy. Their fleshy polyps are also capable of capturing plankton and appropriately sized particulate marine foods. Because species-level identification cannot be confirmed reliably from coloration and external colony appearance alone, Favia sp. is the most appropriate scientific designation for this specimen.
Care Guide:
Scientific Name: Favia sp.
Care Level: Moderate
Lighting: Low to Moderate
Water Flow: Low to Moderate, indirect and variable flow
Placement: Lower to middle areas of the aquarium depending on lighting intensity
Temperament: Aggressive; provide adequate space from neighboring corals
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; may also benefit from occasional targeted feeding with appropriately sized planktonic or finely chopped marine foods
Growth Form: Massive to encrusting colonial growth with fleshy tissue and pronounced corallite ridges
Water Parameters: Maintain stable reef aquarium temperature and salinity along with consistent alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium. Keep nitrate and phosphate measurable and reasonably stable rather than excessively low.
Special Considerations: Avoid strong direct flow that can interfere with normal tissue expansion. Gradually acclimate to brighter lighting. Provide adequate separation from neighboring corals because Favia-type corals may extend sweeper tentacles beyond the visible colony edge, particularly after lights-out.
