Magician Zoanthids

Magician Zoanthids, Zoanthus sp., are colonial cnidarians that form clusters of individual button-like polyps connected by a common mat. This specimen displays deep red to orange oral discs and skirts with vivid fluorescent yellow-green markings concentrated around the mouths, creating the high-contrast coloration associated with the “Magician” name. Each polyp can expand independently while remaining connected to the colony at its base. Zoanthus species contain symbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates that provide much of their nutritional energy, while the polyps can also capture fine suspended plankton and organic particles. Because species-level identification within Zoanthus cannot be confirmed reliably from external appearance alone, Zoanthus sp. is the most scientifically appropriate designation.

Care Guide: Zoanthus sp. is generally hardy and adaptable in established reef aquariums. Provide low to moderate lighting with moderate, variable water movement. Flow should be strong enough to prevent debris from collecting around the colony without keeping the polyps continuously closed. Place the colony on stable rockwork where it receives consistent lighting and circulation. Maintain stable temperature and salinity and keep nitrate and phosphate measurable and reasonably stable rather than excessively low. Most nutrition comes from photosynthesis, though fine planktonic foods and dissolved or suspended organic material may provide supplemental nutrition. Zoanthids can spread across neighboring hard surfaces, so leave room for colony expansion. As with all zoanthids, avoid unnecessary handling of damaged tissue and use appropriate protective practices when cutting or fragging because some zoanthids may contain palytoxin or related compounds.
