The Splendid Dottyback, scientifically known as Manonichthys splendens, is an exceptionally attractive member of the dottyback family Pseudochromidae. Its intricate coloration includes rows of yellow to orange spots and lines across the body, a patterned dorsal fin, contrasting facial markings, bright blue fin margins, and a yellow tail.
Native to the Indo-West Pacific, the species is particularly associated with Indonesia and surrounding regions. It inhabits coral reef environments and is frequently observed around rockwork, corals, and sponges. Sea & Reef specifically reports populations around Flores, Komodo, Sumba, and Timor and notes an association with bushy yellow tube sponges.
The Splendid Dottyback is one of the larger dottybacks. Reliable taxonomic and breeder sources report a maximum length of approximately 13 cm, or 5.1 inches. This is considerably larger than the 3-inch maximum sometimes given in aquarium retail listings.
This specimen is captive bred/tank raised and maintained at Pacific East Aquaculture in dedicated systems separate from our wild-collected fish. Our captive-bred and tank-raised saltwater fish are carefully observed and maintained under professional husbandry protocols prior to sale, without the routine conditioning and proactive treatment protocols used for wild-collected specimens.
The Splendid Dottyback is hardy but can be territorial and assertive, particularly toward smaller fishes and other dottybacks. Captive-bred individuals may be less aggressive than their wild counterparts, but appropriate tankmates and plenty of rockwork are still recommended.

Aquarium Requirements:
Provide substantial rockwork with numerous caves, crevices, and sheltered areas. This gives the fish places to establish a territory and retreat when desired. Because this species can reach about 5 inches and becomes territorial, I would regard 30 gallons as a minimum rather than an ideal adult aquarium size. Larger quarters provide more opportunity to establish territories and reduce conflicts with tankmates.
Temperament:
The Splendid Dottyback is a bold and territorial fish that should not be underestimated because of its relatively compact size. It can defend its territory against considerably larger fishes. It is best housed with appropriately sized, confident tankmates rather than very small or timid species.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef compatible with caution. Splendid Dottybacks are not coral predators, but they are carnivorous and may consume small ornamental shrimp and other small crustaceans. For that reason, I would describe them as reef compatible with caution rather than simply “reef safe.”
Diet and Feeding:
Feed a varied carnivorous diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, krill, finely chopped marine foods, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Captive-bred individuals readily adapt to prepared aquarium foods.
