The Sebae Clownfish, scientifically known as Amphiprion sebae, is a distinctive Indian Ocean clownfish recognized by its dark brown to black body, two broad white bands, and bright yellow coloration on the tail and portions of the lower body.
True Amphiprion sebae is distributed through the Indian Ocean, including the Arabian Peninsula, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Andaman Islands, Sumatra, and Java. It inhabits coastal waters and lagoons at depths of approximately 2–25 meters. FishBase documents a maximum total length of 16 cm, approximately 6.3 inches.
This listing is for a captive-bred/tank-raised pair maintained at Pacific East Aquaculture in dedicated systems separate from our wild-collected fish. Our captive-bred and tank-raised saltwater fish are carefully observed and maintained under professional husbandry protocols prior to sale, without the routine conditioning and proactive treatment protocols used for wild-collected specimens.
Captive-bred Sebae Clownfish are generally more adaptable to aquarium conditions than wild-collected individuals. They are reef compatible and can develop a strong pair bond, although established adults may become territorial around a preferred host or nesting area. Sea & Reef describes the species as comparatively calm for a clownfish, while noting that territoriality can increase with maturity.
Care Guide
Scientific Name: Amphiprion sebae Bleeker, 1853
Common Names: Sebae Clownfish, Sebae Anemonefish
Family: Pomacentridae
Availability: Captive Bred / Tank Raised Pair
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive; adults and established pairs may become territorial
Reef Compatibility: Reef compatible
Minimum Aquarium Size: 30 gallons minimum; larger preferred for a mature pair
Maximum Size: Approximately 6.3 inches (16 cm total length)
Diet: Omnivore
Temperature: 75–82°F
Specific Gravity: 1.023–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Aquarium Requirements:
Provide a stable, mature marine aquarium with rockwork for shelter and adequate swimming space. Because A. sebae becomes a fairly large clownfish, an adult pair benefits from more space than smaller species such as A. ocellaris.
Temperament:
Sebae Clownfish are generally less aggressive than some larger clownfish species, but mature adults and established pairs may defend their territory, host, or nesting site.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef compatible. Sebae Clownfish are not coral predators and are generally well suited to reef aquariums.
Diet and Feeding:
Feed a varied omnivorous diet including quality marine pellets and flakes, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, amphipods, and other appropriately sized frozen or prepared marine foods. Captive-bred Sebae Clownfish readily accept standard aquarium diets.
Natural Host Anemone:
In the wild, Amphiprion sebae is strongly associated with Haddon’s Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla haddoni). FishBase lists this as its natural host association. A host anemone is not required for captive-bred fish to thrive in an aquarium.
