Finger leather corals (often Sinularia species) are soft corals known for their branching, finger-like projections that give them a bushy, tree-like appearance. They typically have a smooth to slightly textured surface and can come in shades of green, tan, or brown, sometimes with subtle fluorescent highlights under actinic lighting. These corals are hardy, fast-growing, and add natural movement and structure to reef aquariums, making them a popular choice for beginners and experienced reef keepers alike.
Care Guide
Finger leathers prefer moderate lighting and moderate water flow to keep their polyps extended and help remove mucus they periodically shed. They thrive in stable water conditions (temperature ~76–80°F, salinity ~1.025, alkalinity 8–9 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1250–1350 ppm) and are quite tolerant of a range of conditions if kept consistent. They can release a protective mucous layer when stressed or during growth, so good flow helps them stay healthy. While they rely mainly on photosynthesis, they benefit from clean water and may absorb nutrients or fine particulates, though direct feeding is not typically required.
