Lava Lamp Discosoma Mushrooms Coral Frag

Lava Lamp Discosoma Mushrooms, Discosoma sp., are colorful corallimorphs known for their broad, fleshy oral discs and highly variable surface textures and coloration. This WYSIWYG coral frag features multiple mushrooms displaying rich burgundy-red to purple tissue covered with vivid fluorescent lime-green vesicles. Some polyps show contrasting blue-gray areas around the center, while the irregular distribution and different sizes of the bright green vesicles create the distinctive “lava lamp” appearance. Discosoma mushrooms contain symbiotic zooxanthellae that provide much of their nutritional needs through photosynthesis, although they can also absorb dissolved nutrients and capture very small suspended foods. Under favorable aquarium conditions, they can spread by division and pedal laceration, gradually forming a larger colony. Because species-level identification within Discosoma cannot reliably be determined from external appearance alone, Discosoma sp. is the most scientifically appropriate designation.

Care Guide: Discosoma sp. generally prefers low to moderate reef lighting with low to moderate, indirect water flow. Strong direct flow should be avoided because it can prevent full expansion or cause mushrooms to detach from their substrate. Place on stable lower to mid-level rockwork with adequate room for expansion and future spreading. Maintain stable salinity, temperature, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, nitrate, and phosphate. Discosoma mushrooms are primarily photosynthetic and generally do not require direct feeding, although occasional fine particulate or very small meaty foods may be accepted. Avoid abrupt changes in lighting, salinity, or temperature, and acclimate gradually when moving them into brighter areas of the aquarium.
