Acanthophyllia corals (Acanthophyllia deshayesiana), often called meat corals, are large-polyp stony (LPS) corals known for their massive, fleshy, single-polyp structure and vibrant colors such as reds, greens, and multicolored patterns. They have a soft, inflated appearance and can fully expand to cover a large area, making them a striking centerpiece in a reef aquarium. Their bold look and relatively peaceful nature make them a favorite among LPS enthusiasts.
Care Guide
For care, Acanthophyllia prefer low to moderate lighting and very gentle water flow to allow their fleshy tissue to expand without stress. They require stable water conditions (temperature ~76–80°F, salinity ~1.025, alkalinity 8–9 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1250–1350 ppm) and are sensitive to sudden changes. They should be placed on the sand bed where they can fully expand and not be disturbed. These corals benefit from regular feedings of meaty foods like mysis shrimp or small pieces of seafood, especially at night, which supports growth, health, and coloration.
